Title: Elucidating the chemical dialogue of microbial communities

Dr. Vanessa V. Phelan, PhD is the L.S. Skaggs Assistant Professor in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus. She received her PhD in Chemistry at Vanderbilt University and completed postdoctoral training at the University of California San Diego.  The focus of the Phelan Lab is on the development and application of modern mass spectrometry based tools in combination with traditional chemical, molecular and biochemical approaches to investigate the role of small molecules in the development of microbiome communities in the context of infectious disease. The small molecule chemistry utilized in microbe-microbe and microbe-host interactions is incredibly understudied. Dr. Phelan investigates these interactions in three ways: 1) genetic and chemical perturbation of single microbial species, 2) interaction of multiple microbial species and 3) interaction of microbial communities with host tissues. She wants to answer two major questions: how does the microbial community determine the metabolic output of individual microbial pathogens (and the host response) and can we replicate the microbial communities of patients in vitro to investigate host-microbe interactions including the effect of pharmaceuticals on both community structure and metabolomics?
